Den's Funky Chunky Brushes For Corel Painter

Several years ago I wanted to make digital brushes for Painter that would let me work the way I work with real oil paints. I wanted to mess up my canvas and smear my paint around and get away from the temptation to make things too detailed at the start of the painting process. I spent many happy hours playing with Painter’s brush designer. Boy, it’s easy to get lost in that thing! It’s so much fun. And that’s how I came up with Den’s Funky Chunky and the other brushes in the collection. Jeremy Sutton asked if he could use the brushes with his classes and later on Marilyn Sholin did too.

Over the years many people have contacted me about my digital Funky Chunky Brushes and It’s wonderful to know that so many people have enjoyed using them as much as I have. But if you love them and you’d like to, you can buy me a beer.

Here they are…

The zip file of Den’s Funky Chunky Brushes. Please feel free to download them and use them in your projects. Enjoy!:-)
A couple of things before you go…
I’m not the right person to ask me about using Painter or installing brushes. I can just about get Painter to work on my PC, so anything more complicated than switching on is pretty much beyond my skill level! :-) Although there are lots of very good people out there who are great at this kind of thing. Please do not sell these brushes or include them on dvd’s for sale etc without asking me.
Happy painting!

  1. Greetings, Denise!

I have watched Jeremy Sutton use your Funky Chunky oil brushes and he chimed in on a thread (http://tinyurl.com/bcuahvo) I began seeking more info them. As luck would have it, Jeremy chimed in and provided the link to your brushes and your website.

I have not used your brushes yet, but I just wanted to say Thank You! for your kindness in allowing others to use your brushes.

    Regards,
    Phillip Anthony

  7. Love, love your brushes. I just upgraded to Painter x3 and am very sad that I can’t get your perfect brushes to load in painter x3. Any ideas and/or do they not work there? Oh I miss them!!! :( They are so great!! :) Don’t know how to get all the differnt parts (.nik, .stk, .jpeg, .xml) to work in Painter x3……and likewise don’t know how to combine them intoo the proper folder name extension to get them to work. Can you give me some direction!!!!!

  8. Hi Denise!

I finally get to meet the Lady that has helped my artworks, since 2006, when I started out with painting. All these years, I only knew you as “Den” and had no idea who was behind the unique brushes that I use often.

So, now that I have formally found out who you are and the you are the talented one that created some of my favorite brushes to use, I wanted to say “Thank you.”

I was introduced to this kind of art, back in 2006 and I haven’t stopped painting since.

I may already have your brushes in my system now, but I downloaded your file again, just to make sure. LOL! I enjoy them that much.

Please keep me informed if you create some new ones, as I am always very interested in working with new formats of styles and nothing works better than a brush that actually grabs the colors and mashes them in the right spots.

    Most Sincerely,

  9. This is to help out Phyllis Kaupp-Seas, as it was stated that she couldn’t get her brushes to load in X3.

To load your new brushes into your working Painter program, you will go into your C:/ and look for “Program Files.” (IF you have an additional folder that says “Program Files (x86)”, ignore that one and only use the one that says “Program Files.”

Open the “Program Files” folder and there you will see the list of programs on your system. Choose the Corel folder and open. If you have upgraded your Painter software, your older versions may also be in this folder, which you can update those as well, if you choose to.

For Painter X3, your folder will actually be listed as “Painter 13.” For Painter 2015, your folder is listed as “Painter 2015.”

Open the folder that says “Painter 13” for the X3 version and go directly to “Brushes” again and there you will find your brush folder, with all your brushes.

Copy all of the files + the folder that Denise has inside her zip file and paste all three into your brush folder you have open.

Now, you are done and ready to paint. Your brushes you just downloaded from Denise, will now show up in your directory in Painter.
    ______________________________________________
What these files are and what they will do:
    ______________________________________________
1 is a .jpg image, which is the thumbnail that you reference in your Painter list for your brushes.

The second file, an XML file, is the codes for the Painter software to recognize your new brushes in your brush list, as Denise’s brushes. Her’s will be in a category by themselves in your Painter Brush List.

The folder you are copying, that is the one that has all the different brushes Denise created and you are using to paint with.

All three of these items must be pasted to your Brush folder, for Painter to see them and make them accessible in your software library.

    Hoped this helped,
    Debbie

  10. Following Debbie’s instructions, Den’s brushes loaded perfectly into Painter 12. Can’t wait to use them…Thanks Denise and Debbie…

  11. Thanks so much for the brushes. I’ve been using Painter many years. I’ve used your brushes for many years, but never knew who Den was. Now I finally found out. You did a wonderful job on making these brushes.

  12. Hi Debbie, I own Corel Painter2015. I’m on a MAC OSX. I can’t install any third party brushes following the method that you kindly supplied. I’ve tried this many times. Do you know of another way of installing them?
I have Den’s brushes on X and did not have trouble installing them, but when I upgraded to 2015 I find this method does not work for me.
Hope you or anyone else can help.

  13. I’m sorry I’ve no idea, I don’t have a mac, but maybe somebody else can help. I’m not very technical I’m afraid.

  14. I followed the directions for loading your brushes and it worked perfectly! Thank you so much. It was easy to follow. I had been trying to install Jeremy’s brushes for 3 days. I seem to be missing the .brush category because I have the jpgs,, nib. stl. and xml. Any thoughts would be appreciated. It is hard to understand because not all brush categories have categorydata.xml

  15. I simply love your brushes.Thank you so much for sharing those wonderful brushes

  16. Wow, thanks so much for the brushes! I saw Jeremy Sutton painting with them and knew I wanted them too. Wonderful that you’ve shared them with us all.
