Just look at those eyes — like twin suns glowing with mischief and mystery! Your humans are so lucky to have you. I’ve loved every second of painting you, and what a joy it’s been to capture all that glossy drama and charm.

Bertie is a black British Shorthair, and he has the most incredible presence. That sleek, plush coat absorbs the light, while flashes of colour shimmer through — purples, russets, and deep blues — a bit like a velvet cloak catching candlelight. I had so much fun exploring those rich undertones in oil, layering colour to bring out the magic in his fur.

And those eyes! Don’t you think they’re amazing? Set against the deep shadow of his coat, they absolutely glow — full of warmth and intelligence, like he’s about to say something very clever (or demand a snack). They’re the heart of the painting. I always say the eyes are where a portrait comes to life, and with Bertie, they stole the show.

Painting him felt like getting to know a quiet, regal soul with a playful streak. I hope I’ve captured even a flicker of that in this portrait.
